Here’s how Anushka Sharma made sure her Zero character looked authentic

Anushka Sharma has always pulled all stops to become Aafia Bhinder, a scientist with cerebral palsy in Aanand L Rai’s Zero. A role that demanded perfectionism, commitment and focus, Anushka ensured she deep dived into every aspect of the character to bring Aafia to life on screen. Aafia is an extremely special character to her director Aanand L Rai and he along with his writer Himanshu has written her with great care and sensitivity. To make his vision into a reality, Anushka ensured that she is as hands on as possible to become Aafia on screen.

“Styling of Aafia had to be key. She suffers from cerebral palsy and cannot wear the clothes that girls would generally be seen wearing. It wouldn’t be authentic. Aanand L Rai and Anushka discussed this at length with Aki Narula and sat in multiple meetings to get the look bang on. Anushka had to wear comfortable clothes that allowed her to essay the role of someone suffering from cerebral palsy. It is a problem that physically limits someone and the clothes had to be fluid and not seen restrictive. From the word go, the team wanted audiences to believe in everything about Aafia and great deal of attention to detail has gone in towards bringing Aafia to life,” reveals a production source.

Anushka had also gone through a rigorous 3 month prep and worked with two professional trainers – an occupational therapist and an audiologist – to get into the skin of her character in Zero. While on set, she used to use the wheel-chair to stay in the skin of her character.

Zero stars Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif and I set to release on December 21, 2018.
